Chancenkarte Points Calculator
Calculate whether you qualify for Germany's Chancenkarte — a complete guide to the points system.
How the Chancenkarte Points System Works
The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) requires a minimum of 6 points across several categories. You need to meet at least one mandatory prerequisite and then accumulate points from the scoring categories below. The system is designed to attract skilled workers who have a realistic chance of finding qualified employment in Germany.
Mandatory prerequisite (must meet at least one): You must have either a foreign university degree recognized in Germany, a foreign vocational qualification recognized in Germany, or a vocational or university qualification from a country with a bilateral agreement with Germany.
If you meet the prerequisite, you can then accumulate points from the following categories.
Points Breakdown by Category
German Language Skills (up to 4 points)
German proficiency is one of the highest-value categories:
B2 or higher = 3 points. Proven by Goethe B2, Telc B2, TestDaF (TDN 4x4), or equivalent. B1 = 2 points. Proven by Goethe B1, Telc B1, or equivalent. A2 = 1 point. Proven by Goethe A2, Telc A2, or equivalent. A1 = 1 point. Proven by Goethe A1 or equivalent.
Note: A1 and A2 each earn 1 point, but the points are not cumulative — if you have B1, you get 2 points (not 2+1+1). Only your highest level counts.
Strategic insight: Moving from A2 (1 point) to B1 (2 points) gains you 1 additional point. Moving from B1 (2 points) to B2 (3 points) also gains 1 point. For many applicants, the B1 to B2 jump requires significantly more study time but provides the same 1-point gain — making B1 the most time-efficient target for Chancenkarte purposes.
English Language Skills (1 point)
B2 English or higher = 1 point. Proven by IELTS (5.5+), TOEFL (72+), Cambridge (FCE/B2), or equivalent. Only one language point bonus is available for English, regardless of how high your level is.
Professional Qualification (up to 4 points)
Recognized qualification in a shortage occupation = 4 points. If your profession is on Germany's shortage occupation list (Mangelberufe), your recognized qualification earns maximum points. Shortage occupations include IT professionals, engineers, healthcare workers, skilled tradespeople, and others.
Recognized qualification (non-shortage) = 3 points. A university or vocational qualification recognized in Germany that is not in a shortage field.
Work Experience (up to 3 points)
5+ years of relevant work experience = 3 points. 2-4 years of relevant work experience = 2 points.
Work experience must be relevant to your qualification and verifiable through employment certificates or references.
Age (up to 2 points)
Under 35 = 2 points. 35-40 = 1 point. Over 40 = 0 points.
This category rewards younger applicants, reflecting Germany's demographic need for workers who will contribute to the economy for many years.
Previous Stay in Germany (1 point)
Previous lawful residence in Germany of at least 6 months in the last 5 years = 1 point. This applies to people who have studied, worked, or interned in Germany previously.

Maximizing Your Points Through Language
If you're close to the 6-point threshold or want a comfortable margin, investing in German language skills is often the most efficient strategy:
From 0 to A2 (1 point): Requires approximately 200-300 hours of study. Good return for applicants who are 1 point short.
From 0 to B1 (2 points): Requires approximately 350-650 hours. The best value for most applicants — 2 points for a moderate investment of study time.
From B1 to B2 (+1 point): Requires approximately 200-400 additional hours. Worth the investment if you need the extra point, but also consider that B2 German itself opens many more career doors once you arrive in Germany.
After the Chancenkarte: What Comes Next
The Chancenkarte grants you up to one year in Germany to search for qualified employment. During this stay, you can work part-time (up to 20 hours/week) in any job, and full-time in trial employment periods (Probearbeit) of up to 2 weeks per employer.
Language during your stay: Use your time in Germany to improve your German. Being immersed in the language accelerates learning dramatically. Many Chancenkarte holders arrive at B1 and reach B2 within their first year through intensive immersion and continued study.
Transitioning to a work visa: Once you find qualifying employment, you transition from the Chancenkarte to a regular work visa or Blue Card. At this point, German language skills strengthen your employment contract negotiations and your long-term settlement prospects.
