What Is Goethe B1 Schreiben Teil 2?

Schreiben Teil 2 is the opinion writing task in the Goethe B1 exam. You read a brief forum discussion topic and write a forum post of approximately 80 to 100 words expressing your opinion on the subject. The prompt specifies content points — typically asking you to state your position, provide reasons, and share a personal experience. You have about 20 minutes for this task.

This task is fundamentally different from Teil 1 because it requires argumentation rather than personal communication. You are not writing to a friend — you are writing for a public forum where other people will read your opinion. This shift means your writing should be more structured, with a clear position, supporting reasons, and a logical flow from introduction to conclusion. The Goethe-Institut includes forum posts at B1 because expressing and supporting opinions is a core B1 competence defined by the Common European Framework of Reference.

How Teil 2 Is Scored

Task fulfillment checks whether you clearly stated your opinion and addressed all required content points. If the prompt asks for your opinion, reasons, and a personal experience, all three elements must be present. Stating an opinion without supporting it, or giving reasons without a clear position, results in lost marks.

Communicative design evaluates the structure and coherence of your forum post. A strong post has a clear beginning (introducing the topic and your position), a developed middle (reasons and examples), and a conclusion (summary or final thought). Examiners also check whether you use appropriate Redemittel (set phrases) for expressing opinions, which signals that you understand how to participate in written discussions.

Grammar and vocabulary assesses whether you use B1-level structures to express your opinion effectively. This includes dass-clauses after opinion verbs (Ich finde, dass...), causal connectors (weil, denn, deshalb), and contrastive connectors (aber, trotzdem, obwohl). Vocabulary should include opinion phrases beyond just Ich finde — vary your expressions to demonstrate range.

Example Task

In an online forum, people are discussing whether children should have their own smartphones. Write a forum post. In your post:

  • State your opinion on the topic
  • Give reasons for your opinion
  • Share a personal experience related to the topic

How to Write a Strong B1 Forum Post

Start by introducing the topic and stating your opinion. Do not jump directly into arguments. Begin with a sentence that shows you understand the discussion: Das Thema Smartphones für Kinder wird oft diskutiert, und ich möchte dazu meine Meinung teilen. (The topic of smartphones for children is often discussed, and I would like to share my opinion.) Then state your position clearly: Ich bin der Meinung, dass Kinder erst ab 12 Jahren ein eigenes Smartphone haben sollten. (I believe that children should only have their own smartphone from age 12.)

Support your opinion with specific reasons. Each reason should be a developed argument, not just a statement. Instead of Smartphones sind schlecht für Kinder (Smartphones are bad for children), write: Ein wichtiger Grund ist, dass kleine Kinder noch nicht verstehen, welche Gefahren im Internet lauern. Sie können leicht auf unangemessene Inhalte stoßen. (An important reason is that small children do not yet understand the dangers that lurk on the internet. They can easily encounter inappropriate content.)

Include a personal experience. The exam specifically tests whether you can connect your opinion to your own life: Ich habe selbst erlebt, dass mein Neffe, der erst 8 Jahre alt ist, viel zu viel Zeit mit seinem Smartphone verbringt. Das hat seine schulischen Leistungen negativ beeinflusst. (I have experienced myself that my nephew, who is only 8 years old, spends far too much time on his smartphone. This has negatively affected his school performance.)

End with a brief conclusion. Summarize your position or pose a question to other forum members: Deshalb denke ich, dass Eltern bei diesem Thema sehr vorsichtig sein sollten. Was denkt ihr darüber? (Therefore I think that parents should be very careful with this topic. What do you think about it?)

Common Forum Post Topics at B1

The Goethe B1 exam draws from topics that are broadly relatable and invite personal opinions. Frequent themes include technology and daily life (social media, smartphones, online shopping), education and learning (school systems, language learning methods, homework), lifestyle choices (vegetarian diet, sports, city versus country living), work and career (remote work, part-time jobs for students, work-life balance), and social issues (volunteer work, environmental protection, public transport).

These topics are chosen because B1 candidates can reasonably have personal opinions and experiences related to them, regardless of their background.

Redemittel (Set Phrases) for Forum Posts

Having a reliable set of opinion phrases makes your forum post sound natural and earns marks for communicative design. For stating opinions: Ich bin der Meinung, dass..., Meiner Meinung nach..., Ich finde, dass..., Ich persönlich denke, dass.... For giving reasons: Ein Grund dafür ist, dass..., Das liegt daran, dass..., Zum Beispiel..., Außerdem.... For personal experience: Aus meiner Erfahrung..., Ich habe selbst erlebt, dass..., In meinem Umfeld.... For conclusions: Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, dass..., Deshalb bin ich der Meinung, dass..., Alles in allem denke ich, dass....

Common Mistakes in B1 Schreiben Teil 2

Not clearly stating an opinion is the most critical error. Some candidates describe the topic from multiple angles without ever committing to a position. The task requires you to state your opinion — be direct and unambiguous.

Listing reasons without developing them. Writing Smartphones sind teuer. Smartphones sind gefährlich. Smartphones machen süchtig. is a list, not an argument. Each reason needs at least one sentence of explanation or example.

Forgetting the personal experience. If the prompt asks for it, your personal experience must be clearly present. Candidates who focus entirely on abstract arguments miss this content point.

Using only Ich finde as an opinion expression. Repeating the same phrase throughout your post suggests limited vocabulary. Vary your Redemittel to demonstrate range.

Writing an informal response when the forum context calls for a semi-formal, structured post. While a forum is less formal than a business letter, it should still be organized and articulate — not chatty or fragmented.
