Practice B2 Speaking (Sprechen)

Prepare for the Goethe B2 Sprechen section — master presentations, discussions, and spontaneous argumentation.

The Goethe B2 Sprechen section tests your ability to give a structured presentation, engage in a discussion, and negotiate solutions. The exam lasts approximately 15 minutes and is conducted in pairs.

Task Types

Teil 1 – Presentation

Give a 4-minute presentation on a topic, discussing advantages and disadvantages with your own position.

Teil 2 – Discussion

Discuss a controversial topic with your partner, presenting arguments for and against, and responding to counterarguments.

Tips for Success

  • Structure your presentation clearly: introduction, arguments for/against, personal position, conclusion
  • In the discussion, listen actively and respond directly to your partner's points rather than reciting prepared arguments
  • Use hedging language: 'Ich sehe das etwas anders...', 'Da bin ich nicht ganz sicher...'
  • Demonstrate B2-level vocabulary by avoiding repetition and using precise terms

The Goethe B2 Sprechen Section

The B2 speaking exam is significantly more demanding than B1. You are expected to present complex ideas, argue for and against positions, respond to counterarguments, and negotiate solutions — all fluently and with appropriate vocabulary. The exam lasts about 15 minutes and is conducted in pairs with one or two examiners.

The key difference from B1: at B2, you must demonstrate the ability to discuss abstract topics, handle disagreement diplomatically, and express nuanced positions. Simple agreement (Ja, das finde ich auch) is not enough — you need to develop your responses with reasons, examples, and qualifications.

Teil 1: Presentation (Vortrag)

You receive a topic with a prompt — for example, "Should companies allow employees to work from home?" or "Is social media beneficial or harmful for young people?" You have time to prepare (usually with a preparation sheet showing the topic and suggested aspects to cover) and then present for approximately 4 minutes.

Presentation structure for B2:

Opening: State the topic and its relevance. Ich möchte heute über das Thema „..." sprechen. Dieses Thema ist besonders aktuell, weil... (I would like to speak today about the topic "..." This topic is particularly relevant because...)

Background: Briefly set the context. In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Situation verändert... (In recent years the situation has changed...)

Arguments for: Present 2-3 strong arguments with examples. Ein wichtiges Argument dafür ist, dass... Das zeigt sich zum Beispiel daran, dass... (An important argument in favor is that... This is evident from the fact that...)

Arguments against: Present 2-3 counterarguments fairly. Andererseits muss man bedenken, dass... Kritiker weisen darauf hin, dass... (On the other hand, one must consider that... Critics point out that...)

Your position: State and justify your own view. Ich persönlich bin der Meinung, dass... Der Hauptgrund dafür ist... (I personally believe that... The main reason is...)

Conclusion: Summarize briefly. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass es sowohl Vor- als auch Nachteile gibt, aber... (In summary, it can be said that there are both advantages and disadvantages, but...)

What examiners look for at B2: coherent structure, variety in argumentation (not just listing points but developing them), precise vocabulary (not just gut/schlecht but vorteilhaft/nachteilig/problematisch), complex sentence structures (subordinate clauses, Konjunktiv II, passive), and smooth transitions between sections.

Teil 2: Discussion (Diskussion)

After both presentations, you and your partner discuss a related topic or scenario. This might involve debating a position, comparing perspectives, or finding a compromise. The discussion tests spontaneous interaction, active listening, and the ability to agree and disagree diplomatically.

Agreeing and building on ideas: Da stimme ich dir voll zu. Hinzu kommt, dass... (I fully agree with you. In addition...) Das ist ein guter Punkt. Ich möchte noch ergänzen, dass... (That's a good point. I'd like to add that...)

Disagreeing diplomatically: Ich verstehe deinen Standpunkt, aber ich sehe das etwas anders... (I understand your point of view, but I see it somewhat differently...) Da bin ich anderer Meinung. Meiner Erfahrung nach... (I disagree on that. In my experience...) Das mag stimmen, allerdings sollte man auch bedenken, dass... (That may be true, however one should also consider that...)

Asking for clarification: Könntest du das genauer erklären? (Could you explain that more precisely?) Was meinst du genau mit...? (What exactly do you mean by...?)

Finding common ground: Vielleicht können wir uns darauf einigen, dass... (Perhaps we can agree that...) Ich denke, wir sind uns einig, dass... Der Unterschied liegt darin, wie... (I think we agree that... The difference lies in how...)

B2 Speaking Redemittel (Set Phrases)

Having a repertoire of sophisticated set phrases ready to deploy is what separates a confident B2 speaker from one who struggles. Memorize and practice using these naturally:

Introducing a topic: In der heutigen Gesellschaft wird viel über... diskutiert. (In today's society, there is much discussion about...)

Giving reasons: Das liegt vor allem daran, dass... (This is mainly because...) Ein wesentlicher Grund dafür ist... (A key reason for this is...)

Giving examples: Das lässt sich gut am Beispiel von... verdeutlichen. (This can be clearly illustrated with the example of...) Nehmen wir zum Beispiel... (Let's take for example...)

Expressing consequences: Das hat zur Folge, dass... (This has the consequence that...) Daraus ergibt sich, dass... (From this it follows that...)

Contrasting: Einerseits... andererseits... (On the one hand... on the other hand...) Zwar... aber... (While... but...) Im Gegensatz dazu... (In contrast to that...)

Common B2 Speaking Mistakes

Speaking like a B1 candidate: Using simple sentences, basic vocabulary, and short responses without development. At B2, every point you make should be supported with a reason or example.

Monologuing during the discussion: The discussion is interactive. Listen to your partner, respond to their specific points, and build a real conversation rather than delivering parallel monologues.

Neglecting self-correction: If you start a sentence incorrectly, correct it smoothly. Self-correction demonstrates language awareness and is valued by examiners.

Using only memorized phrases: While Redemittel are valuable, stringing together memorized phrases without genuine content sounds mechanical. Use the phrases as scaffolding for your own ideas.
