Genitive for Possession

The genitive expresses possession and is the formal equivalent of English's "'s" or "of":

Das Auto meines Vaters ist blau. (My father's car is blue.) Die Meinung der Experten ist eindeutig. (The opinion of the experts is clear.) Am Ende des Monats bezahle ich die Miete. (At the end of the month, I pay the rent.)

In spoken German, von + Dativ often replaces the genitive: das Auto von meinem Vater. In Goethe exam writing, especially at B2, the genitive form is preferred because it sounds more educated and formal.

Common Genitive Mistakes in the Goethe Exam

Using Dativ instead of Genitiv after genitive prepositions: Wegen dem Regen — spoken German but not appropriate for formal Goethe B2 writing. Correct: Wegen des Regens.

Forgetting the -s/-es on masculine and neuter nouns: Des Wetter — wrong. Des Wetters — correct. The noun ending is mandatory.

Wrong article form: Während die Ferien — wrong. Während der Ferien — correct. The genitive plural article is der, not die.
