What Is Goethe B2 Schreiben Teil 2?
Schreiben Teil 2 is the formal message task in the Goethe B2 exam. You write a formal message of approximately 150 to 200 words — typically a complaint, application, request, or cancellation — to a company, institution, or authority. The prompt provides a scenario with specific content points that your message must address. You have about 25 minutes.
While B1 Teil 3 also tests formal letter writing, the B2 version demands significantly higher sophistication. At B2, examiners expect consistently formal register with advanced politeness conventions (Konjunktiv II for requests), complex sentence structures (relative clauses, participial phrases, passive constructions), precise formal vocabulary, and a longer, more developed text that demonstrates the ability to argue, explain, and persuade in a professional context.
This task directly mirrors real formal communication in Germany. Whether you are writing to a landlord about a rental dispute, to an employer about working conditions, or to a course provider about a quality issue, the same formal conventions and structural expectations apply.
How Teil 2 Is Scored
Task fulfillment checks whether you addressed all required content points and achieved the communicative goal of the letter. A complaint must clearly describe the problem and state a resolution; an application must present qualifications and motivation. Missing any required element reduces your score.
Register and appropriateness evaluates whether your formal register is consistent throughout. At B2, this means going beyond basic Sie-form: examiners check for Konjunktiv II in polite requests (Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn...), appropriate formal vocabulary (bezüglich instead of wegen, mitteilen instead of sagen), and professional tone without emotional outbursts.
Grammar range and accuracy assesses your control of complex structures. B2 formal writing should include passive voice (Das Gerät wurde am 15. März geliefert), extended participial attributes (die in Ihrer Anzeige genannte Stelle), and Konjunktiv II for hypothetical or polite statements (Sollte das Problem nicht behoben werden, wäre ich gezwungen...).
Vocabulary range evaluates whether your formal vocabulary is precise and varied. Using Ich möchte mich beschweren in every sentence shows limited range. Alternating with Ich sehe mich veranlasst, Ihnen mitzuteilen..., Leider muss ich feststellen, dass..., and Ich möchte Sie auf folgendes Problem aufmerksam machen demonstrates B2 vocabulary.
Example Task
You recently attended a language course at a Volkshochschule but were dissatisfied with the quality. Write a formal complaint to the school administration. In your message:
- State which course you attended and when
- Describe the specific problems you experienced
- Explain how this affected your learning
- Request a specific resolution (refund, replacement course, etc.)
How to Write a B2 Formal Message
Open with a clear subject line and formal greeting. Betreff: Beschwerde bezüglich des Deutschkurses B1 (September–November 2025) gives the recipient all key information at a glance. Follow with Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, or, if a name is provided, Sehr geehrte Frau Dr. Schmidt,.
State your purpose and reference details in the first paragraph. Hiermit möchte ich mich über den oben genannten Deutschkurs beschweren, den ich vom 1. September bis zum 30. November 2025 an Ihrer Volkshochschule besucht habe. This sentence establishes who you are, what you are writing about, and the relevant timeframe — all in one professionally structured sentence.
Describe problems with specific evidence. Each complaint should be factual and detailed: Während des gesamten Kurses wurde der Unterricht wiederholt ohne Vorankündigung abgesagt. Darüber hinaus entsprach das verwendete Lehrmaterial nicht dem angekündigten B1-Niveau, sondern eher dem A2-Niveau. (Throughout the course, classes were repeatedly cancelled without prior notice. Furthermore, the teaching materials used did not correspond to the advertised B1 level but rather to A2 level.) Specific details — dates, frequency, concrete examples — make your complaint credible.
Explain the impact on you. Infolgedessen konnte ich die angestrebten Lernziele nicht erreichen, was für mich besonders problematisch ist, da ich den Kurs zur Vorbereitung auf die Goethe-B1-Prüfung besucht habe. (As a result, I was unable to achieve the intended learning goals, which is particularly problematic for me as I attended the course to prepare for the Goethe B1 exam.)
Make a polite but firm request using Konjunktiv II. Ich wäre Ihnen sehr dankbar, wenn Sie mir die Kursgebühren vollständig erstatten oder mir die Möglichkeit geben würden, den Kurs kostenfrei zu wiederholen. (I would be very grateful if you would fully refund the course fees or give me the opportunity to repeat the course free of charge.) The Konjunktiv II structure is expected at B2 and demonstrates grammatical sophistication.
Close professionally with a deadline and formal sign-off. Ich bitte Sie, sich bis zum [Datum] bei mir zu melden. Für Rückfragen stehe ich Ihnen gerne zur Verfügung. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, [Name] (I ask you to contact me by [date]. I am available for any questions. With kind regards, [Name])
Common Formal Message Scenarios at B2
The Goethe B2 exam uses a variety of formal writing scenarios. Complaints (Beschwerde/Reklamation) about products, services, or living conditions are the most frequent. Job applications (Bewerbung) test your ability to present qualifications professionally. Information requests (Anfrage) about courses, services, or programs test polite inquiry skills. Cancellations (Kündigung) of contracts, memberships, or subscriptions test formal notification conventions. Formal responses to proposals or invitations test your ability to accept, decline, or negotiate in a professional context.
Advanced Formal Vocabulary for B2
At B2, your formal vocabulary should go beyond basic politeness. For opening: Bezug nehmend auf... (With reference to...), In Bezug auf Ihr Schreiben vom... (Regarding your letter of...), Hiermit möchte ich Sie darüber in Kenntnis setzen, dass... (I hereby wish to inform you that...). For describing problems: Leider musste ich feststellen, dass... (Unfortunately, I had to notice that...), Zu meinem Bedauern... (To my regret...), Es ist mir unverständlich, warum... (It is incomprehensible to me why...). For requests: Ich wäre Ihnen sehr verbunden, wenn... (I would be much obliged if...), Ich ersuche Sie, ... (I request that you...), Ich sehe mich gezwungen, ... geltend zu machen. (I find myself compelled to claim...).
Common Mistakes in B2 Schreiben Teil 2
Using B1-level formal language in a B2 task. Writing Ich möchte mich beschweren. Das Produkt ist kaputt. is functional but lacks B2 sophistication. The vocabulary and structures should reflect advanced formal competence.
Breaking register with emotional language. Das ist eine Unverschämtheit! (That is an outrage!) is too emotional for formal correspondence, even in a complaint. Maintain Sachlichkeit (objectivity) throughout.
Writing overly long, unclear sentences. Complex grammar is valued, but clarity comes first. A 40-word sentence with three nested subordinate clauses that loses its thread is worse than two clear 20-word sentences.
Forgetting Konjunktiv II in requests. At B2, polite requests should use Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn... or Könnten Sie mir bitte mitteilen, ob.... Direct requests without Konjunktiv II (Geben Sie mir mein Geld zurück) are too blunt.
