What Is Goethe B2 Schreiben Teil 1?

Schreiben Teil 1 is the argumentative forum comment task in the Goethe B2 exam. You receive a topic — usually framed as an online forum discussion — and write a detailed comment of approximately 150 to 200 words. The task requires you to consider a topic from multiple perspectives, present arguments for and against, include examples, and state your own position with a clear conclusion. You have about 25 minutes.

This task represents a significant jump from B1. At B1, you wrote a simple opinion post with basic reasons. At B2, examiners expect nuanced argumentation: acknowledging different viewpoints before stating your own, using concessive structures (Zwar... aber..., Obwohl...), and demonstrating the ability to discuss abstract topics like work culture, education policy, or social change. The forum comment is often the task where B2 candidates either prove their advanced competence or reveal that they are still writing at B1 level.

How Teil 1 Is Scored

Four criteria are evaluated, each contributing to your overall Schreiben score.

Task fulfillment (Inhalt) checks whether you discussed the topic from multiple angles and clearly expressed your own position. A one-sided argument that ignores opposing viewpoints does not meet the B2 task requirements, even if it is well-written.

Coherence and cohesion (Kohärenz) evaluates how your text flows. Examiners look for logical paragraph structure, smooth transitions between arguments, and appropriate use of advanced connectors like einerseits... andererseits, zwar... aber, darüber hinaus, and dennoch. Jumping between ideas without transitions is a coherence error.

Grammar range and accuracy (Grammatik) assesses whether you use a variety of complex structures correctly. At B2, this means relative clauses, passive voice, Konjunktiv II, participial constructions, and complex sentence patterns with multiple subordinate clauses. Using only simple SVO sentences scores poorly on grammar range even if every sentence is correct.

Vocabulary range (Wortschatz) evaluates whether your word choices are varied, precise, and appropriate for the topic. Repeating gut, schlecht, and wichtig throughout suggests A2/B1 vocabulary. B2 candidates should use topic-specific language and varied expressions.

Example Task

In an online forum, people are debating whether remote work should become the standard for office jobs. Write a comment for the forum. In your comment:

  • Express your opinion on the topic
  • Present arguments both for and against remote work
  • Share relevant examples from your experience or knowledge
  • Draw a conclusion

How to Write a B2 Forum Comment

Open by introducing the topic and its relevance. A strong opening contextualizes the discussion: Die Frage, ob Homeoffice zum Standard werden sollte, beschäftigt derzeit viele Arbeitnehmer und Arbeitgeber gleichermaßen. Seit der Pandemie hat sich die Arbeitswelt grundlegend verändert, und die Debatte über flexible Arbeitsmodelle ist aktueller denn je. This shows topical awareness and demonstrates B2-level vocabulary from the first sentence.

Present arguments from multiple perspectives. Dedicate a paragraph to arguments in favor and a paragraph to arguments against — or use Einerseits... andererseits... structures to weave them together. For each argument, provide a brief explanation and, where possible, an example: Einerseits bietet Homeoffice den Vorteil, dass Pendlerzeiten entfallen und Mitarbeiter ihre Arbeitszeit flexibler einteilen können. Andererseits beklagen viele Arbeitnehmer die fehlende soziale Interaktion und die zunehmende Vermischung von Berufs- und Privatleben.

Include concrete examples or references. Examples elevate your argumentation from abstract to credible: In meinem eigenen Unternehmen hat die Einführung von zwei Homeoffice-Tagen pro Woche die Mitarbeiterzufriedenheit deutlich gesteigert, ohne die Produktivität zu beeinträchtigen. Personal experience, general knowledge, or hypothetical scenarios all work at B2 level.

State your own position clearly. After presenting both sides, commit to a position: Aus meiner Sicht sollte Homeoffice als Option angeboten werden, aber nicht zur Pflicht werden. Ein hybrides Modell, bei dem Mitarbeiter selbst entscheiden können, erscheint mir als der beste Kompromiss.

End with a strong conclusion. Summarize your key argument and close the comment: Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Zukunft der Arbeit in der Flexibilität liegt — nicht in starren Modellen, egal ob im Büro oder zu Hause.

Argumentation Structures for B2

The B2 exam rewards specific argumentative patterns. The Einerseits... andererseits structure presents two sides of an argument in balance. The Zwar... aber structure concedes a point before countering it — Zwar bietet Homeoffice viele Vorteile, aber die sozialen Nachteile dürfen nicht unterschätzt werden. (Admittedly, remote work offers many advantages, but the social disadvantages should not be underestimated.) The Je... desto structure shows proportional relationships — Je mehr Menschen von zu Hause arbeiten, desto wichtiger wird eine gute digitale Infrastruktur. (The more people work from home, the more important good digital infrastructure becomes.)

Using these structures demonstrates the grammatical sophistication that examiners expect at B2 and directly improves your grammar range score.

Common Topics for B2 Forum Comments

B2 forum comment topics tend to be more abstract and socially oriented than B1 topics. Frequent themes include work culture and labor market changes (remote work, gig economy, work-life balance), education and technology (digital learning, university tuition, AI in education), environment and sustainability (climate policies, electric vehicles, consumer behavior), media and communication (social media influence, fake news, privacy), and urbanization and society (housing affordability, public transport, integration).

Preparing argumentation vocabulary for these topic areas gives you a significant advantage on exam day.

Common Mistakes in B2 Schreiben Teil 1

Writing a one-sided argument that only presents your opinion without acknowledging opposing views. B2 specifically requires you to consider multiple perspectives. Even if you have a strong opinion, you must show that you understand the counterarguments.

Using B1-level vocabulary and grammar in a B2 task. Writing Ich finde Homeoffice gut, weil man mehr Zeit hat is B1. Writing Aus meiner Sicht bietet das Homeoffice-Modell erhebliche Vorteile hinsichtlich der Zeiteffizienz is B2. The content is similar, but the vocabulary and grammar complexity are different.

Lacking clear paragraph structure. A wall of text without paragraph breaks scores poorly on coherence. Use clear paragraphs: introduction, arguments for, arguments against, your position, conclusion.

Repeating the same connectors. Using außerdem five times in one comment signals limited vocabulary. Vary your connectors: darüber hinaus, ferner, des Weiteren, hinzu kommt, zusätzlich.
