Why German Transition Words Boost Your Schreiben Score

Transition words, known as Konnektoren in German, are one of the fastest ways to improve your Goethe exam writing score. Examiners at every level — from A2 through B2 — evaluate a criterion called Kohärenz (text coherence). This measures how smoothly your ideas connect from one sentence to the next and how logically your text flows from introduction to conclusion.

A text without transition words reads like a disconnected list of statements. A text with well-placed Konnektoren reads like a structured, persuasive argument. The difference between a mediocre Schreiben score and a high one often comes down to how effectively you use connectors to guide the reader through your reasoning.

In the Goethe B1 Schreiben section, examiners expect you to use basic connectors like und, aber, deshalb, weil, and trotzdem correctly and consistently. At the Goethe B2 level, you are expected to go further — using advanced connectors like darüber hinaus, nichtsdestotrotz, einerseits... andererseits, and sowohl... als auch to demonstrate linguistic range.

Connectors for Adding Information

When you want to build on a point or introduce additional arguments, these Konnektoren are essential:

außerdem (furthermore, additionally) is the most versatile connector for adding new points. It works at both B1 and B2 levels and signals that you have more to say on the topic. Example: Außerdem ist es wichtig, dass man regelmäßig Sport treibt. (Furthermore, it is important that one exercises regularly.)

darüber hinaus (beyond that, moreover) carries more weight than außerdem and is particularly valued at the B2 level. It signals that you are going beyond what has already been discussed. Example: Darüber hinaus zeigen Studien, dass Homeoffice die Produktivität steigern kann. (Moreover, studies show that working from home can increase productivity.)

zusätzlich (in addition) and des Weiteren (furthermore) are useful alternatives that prevent repetition. Examiners notice when you use the same connector repeatedly, and variety is rewarded.

Connectors for Contrasting Ideas

Presenting contrasts is essential in forum posts and opinion pieces — two of the most common Goethe Schreiben task types:

trotzdem (nevertheless, despite that) introduces a point that contrasts with or contradicts what came before. It is an adverb and causes inversion (verb in second position). Example: Das Wetter war schlecht. Trotzdem sind wir spazieren gegangen. (The weather was bad. Nevertheless, we went for a walk.)

jedoch (however) is a more formal alternative to trotzdem and is particularly appropriate at B2 level. Example: Die Idee klingt gut. Jedoch gibt es einige praktische Probleme. (The idea sounds good. However, there are some practical problems.)

einerseits... andererseits (on the one hand... on the other hand) is the go-to structure for presenting two sides of an argument. In Goethe B2 Schreiben Teil 1, where you must discuss a topic from multiple perspectives, this connector pair is almost indispensable. Example: Einerseits bietet die Digitalisierung viele Vorteile. Andererseits birgt sie auch Risiken für den Datenschutz. (On the one hand, digitalization offers many advantages. On the other hand, it also carries risks for data privacy.)

obwohl (although) introduces a subordinate clause and sends the verb to the end. Example: Obwohl viele Menschen dagegen sind, wird die Maßnahme umgesetzt. (Although many people are against it, the measure is being implemented.)

Connectors for Cause and Effect

Explaining reasons and consequences is at the heart of good argumentative writing in German:

deshalb / deswegen / daher (therefore, for that reason) all express a consequence. They are adverbs that cause inversion. Example: Ich hatte keine Zeit. Deshalb konnte ich nicht kommen. (I had no time. Therefore, I could not come.)

weil (because) is the most common way to give a reason. It introduces a subordinate clause where the conjugated verb goes to the end. Example: Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten möchte. (I am learning German because I want to work in Germany.)

da (since, because) functions like weil but is more formal. It is often preferred at B2 level and commonly appears at the beginning of a sentence. Example: Da die Kosten gestiegen sind, müssen wir sparen. (Since costs have risen, we need to save.)

denn (because, for) is a coordinating conjunction that does not change word order. This makes it easier to use than weil for many learners. Example: Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank. (I am staying home, because I am sick.)

Connectors for Concluding and Summarizing

A strong conclusion is critical in both B1 and B2 Schreiben tasks. These connectors signal that you are wrapping up your argument:

zusammenfassend (in summary) is a clear signal that you are about to state your final position. Example: Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Vorteile überwiegen. (In summary, it can be said that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.)

alles in allem (all in all) works well as a conversational conclusion in forum posts. Example: Alles in allem bin ich der Meinung, dass wir mehr tun müssen. (All in all, I am of the opinion that we need to do more.)

abschließend (in conclusion) and schließlich (finally, after all) are formal alternatives that work well in B2 writing tasks.

Word Order Rules After German Connectors

One of the trickiest aspects of using Konnektoren is understanding how they affect word order. Getting this wrong can cost you grammar points even when you choose the right connector.

Coordinating conjunctions (und, aber, oder, denn, sondern) do not change word order. The subject stays before the verb, just like in a normal main clause. These are called Position Null connectors because they sit outside the sentence structure.

Adverbial connectors (deshalb, trotzdem, außerdem, jedoch, dann, danach) cause inversion. The verb comes immediately after the connector, followed by the subject. This is because these words occupy Position 1 in the sentence, pushing the subject to Position 3.

Subordinating conjunctions (weil, da, dass, ob, wenn, obwohl, damit) send the conjugated verb to the end of the clause. When a subordinate clause comes first, the main clause that follows begins with the verb (inversion in the main clause).

Understanding these three categories and applying the correct word order for each is essential. Examiners evaluate word order under the grammar criterion, and systematic errors with connector word order will lower your score significantly.

B1 vs. B2: Which Connectors Are Expected?

For the Goethe B1 exam, you are expected to use common connectors accurately. Focus on mastering: und, aber, oder, weil, deshalb, trotzdem, obwohl, wenn, dass, außerdem, zum Beispiel. Using these correctly and consistently throughout your text will satisfy the coherence requirements at B1 level.

For the Goethe B2 exam, examiners expect variety and sophistication. In addition to the B1 connectors, you should incorporate: darüber hinaus, nichtsdestotrotz, einerseits... andererseits, sowohl... als auch, nicht nur... sondern auch, je... desto, infolgedessen, demzufolge, im Gegensatz dazu. Using a range of advanced connectors demonstrates the linguistic maturity expected at B2 and directly contributes to higher scores in both coherence and vocabulary range.

How Examiners Evaluate Text Coherence (Kohärenz)

Goethe examiners look at several aspects when scoring Kohärenz. They check whether your text has a clear logical structure — introduction, body, and conclusion. They evaluate whether each sentence connects to the previous one in a meaningful way. They assess whether your transitions are appropriate for the relationship between ideas (contrast, cause, addition, etc.). And they check whether you use a variety of connectors rather than repeating the same one throughout your text.

A common mistake is overusing und and aber while ignoring more specific connectors. If your text reads "Ich denke... und... und... aber... und...," the examiner will mark your coherence as basic even if your grammar is otherwise correct.
