Why Opinion Phrases Are Crucial for Goethe Schreiben

Expressing your opinion clearly and persuasively is at the heart of two major Goethe exam writing tasks: the B1 Schreiben Teil 2 (forum post) and the B2 Schreiben Teil 1 (forum comment). In both tasks, you must take a position on a given topic, support it with arguments and examples, and demonstrate that you can engage with different perspectives. The phrases you use to introduce, develop, and defend your opinions — known as Redemittel — directly affect your scores in task fulfillment, coherence, and vocabulary range.

Examiners do not just evaluate whether you have an opinion. They assess how you express it: Do you use varied phrases or repeat the same one? Do you demonstrate the ability to agree, disagree, concede, and counter-argue? Can you distinguish between a strong conviction and a tentative suggestion? Mastering a range of opinion Redemittel gives you the tools to handle any topic the exam throws at you.

Stating Your Opinion: From Soft to Strong

German offers many ways to express an opinion, and the level of strength or certainty you convey matters. Using a variety of opinion phrases across different strength levels demonstrates linguistic range, which is scored separately in the Goethe B2 exam.

Tentative or soft opinions work well when you want to be diplomatic or when the topic is genuinely debatable:

Ich denke, dass... (I think that...) — common at B1 level, this is a neutral way to introduce a personal view.

Ich glaube, dass... (I believe that...) — similar to ich denke, slightly more personal.

Ich finde, dass... (I find that...) — slightly informal, very common in everyday German and perfectly acceptable at B1 level.

Meiner Meinung nach... (In my opinion...) — a classic phrase that works at both B1 and B2. Note: Meiner Meinung nach causes inversion (verb before subject).

Standard opinion statements convey a clear position without sounding extreme:

Ich bin der Meinung, dass... (I am of the opinion that...) — more formal and structured than ich denke. This is an excellent default for both B1 and B2 exam writing.

Ich vertrete die Ansicht, dass... (I hold the view that...) — a sophisticated B2-level phrase that impresses examiners.

Aus meiner Sicht... (From my point of view...) — a concise alternative that varies your phrasing.

Was mich betrifft,... (As for me,...) / Was mich angeht,... (As far as I am concerned,...) — useful for transitioning from a general discussion to your personal stance.

Strong convictions show certainty and are useful when your argument is well-supported:

Ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass... (I am firmly convinced that...) — a powerful B2-level phrase for strong positions.

Es steht außer Frage, dass... (It is beyond question that...) — very strong, use only when presenting something you consider undeniable.

Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass... (I am of the firm conviction that...) — a longer variant of überzeugt that demonstrates complex phrase structure.

Agreeing with Others' Positions

In forum post tasks, you may need to agree with a statement or position presented in the prompt. Using agreement phrases beyond a simple "ja" shows communicative competence:

Ich stimme (völlig) zu, dass... (I (completely) agree that...) — the standard agreement phrase that works at all levels.

Da haben Sie/hast du völlig recht. (You are absolutely right about that.) — note the formal (Sie) vs. informal (du) distinction, and match it to the task register.

Dem kann ich nur zustimmen. (I can only agree with that.) — a concise, effective agreement phrase at B2 level.

Das sehe ich genauso. (I see it exactly the same way.) — an alternative that adds variety.

Ich teile diese Meinung / Auffassung. (I share this opinion / view.) — formal and appropriate for B2 writing.

Disagreeing Politely and Firmly

Disagreement is where many learners struggle — they either sound too harsh or too vague. German offers a range of disagreement phrases that let you express opposition while maintaining a respectful tone:

Polite disagreement:

Ich bin anderer Meinung. (I have a different opinion.) — neutral and diplomatic.

Das sehe ich anders. (I see it differently.) — soft disagreement that opens space for your alternative view.

Ich kann diese Ansicht nicht teilen. (I cannot share this view.) — formal and measured.

Da bin ich leider anderer Meinung. (I'm afraid I disagree.) — the leider softens the disagreement.

Stronger disagreement:

Ich muss dem widersprechen. (I must disagree with that.) — clear and firm.

Das entspricht nicht meiner Erfahrung. (That does not match my experience.) — grounding your disagreement in personal experience adds credibility.

Dieses Argument überzeugt mich nicht. (This argument does not convince me.) — directly challenges the reasoning rather than the person.

Giving Examples and Evidence

Supporting your opinion with examples is essential for both task fulfillment and text coherence. Examiners expect to see concrete support for your claims:

Zum Beispiel... (For example...) — the basic connector for introducing examples. Works at all levels but should not be your only option.

Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist... (A good example of this is...) — more structured and impressive than plain zum Beispiel.

Das zeigt sich auch daran, dass... (This is also shown by the fact that...) — an excellent B2-level phrase that links evidence to argument.

Aus eigener Erfahrung kann ich sagen, dass... (From my own experience, I can say that...) — personal examples are valued in Goethe exam writing and this phrase introduces them elegantly.

Studien haben gezeigt, dass... (Studies have shown that...) / Experten sind der Meinung, dass... (Experts are of the opinion that...) — referencing external authority adds weight to your argument. You do not need to cite actual studies — the phrase itself demonstrates B2-level communicative competence.

Conceding and Counter-Arguing

The ability to acknowledge the other side before presenting your own position is one of the key skills tested at B2 level. This technique is called concession and counter-argument:

Es stimmt zwar, dass..., aber... (It is true that..., but...) — the classic concession structure. Use zwar... aber to acknowledge a valid point while signaling that you are about to disagree.

Auf der einen Seite... auf der anderen Seite... (On one side... on the other side...) — presents a balanced view before you take a position.

Obwohl [Gegenargument], bin ich der Meinung, dass... (Although [counterargument], I am of the opinion that...) — integrates concession and opinion into a single complex sentence, demonstrating grammatical range.

Man könnte argumentieren, dass..., jedoch... (One could argue that..., however...) — a sophisticated B2 construction using Konjunktiv II (könnte) that examiners notice and reward.

Ich verstehe die Gegenseite, aber... (I understand the other side, but...) — simple and effective, showing that you have considered alternative perspectives.

Building a Complete Argument Structure

In Goethe B1 Teil 2, a well-structured forum post follows this pattern: state your opinion, give one or two reasons with examples, and end with a concluding sentence. At B2 level, the expected structure is more sophisticated: introduce the topic, acknowledge different perspectives, present your own position with arguments and evidence, address potential counterarguments, and draw a conclusion.

A B2 forum comment might flow like this: In der heutigen Diskussion geht es um... (introduction) → Einerseits... andererseits... (presenting both sides) → Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass... (your position) → Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist... (evidence) → Man könnte zwar einwenden, dass..., aber... (concession and counter) → Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass... (conclusion).

B1 vs. B2: Expected Sophistication

For the Goethe B1 Schreiben Teil 2, examiners expect you to express a clear opinion, support it with at least one or two reasons, and possibly give an example. Using phrases like Ich finde, dass..., Meiner Meinung nach..., and zum Beispiel is sufficient. The focus is on clarity and coherence rather than complexity.

For the Goethe B2 Schreiben Teil 1, the bar is significantly higher. Examiners expect varied Redemittel across different categories (opinion, agreement, disagreement, concession, conclusion). They expect you to consider multiple perspectives, not just state your own view. And they evaluate whether your vocabulary goes beyond B1-level basics. Using phrases like Ich vertrete die Ansicht, dass..., Man könnte argumentieren, dass..., and Das zeigt sich auch daran, dass... demonstrates the range expected at B2.
