Word Order in Conditional Sentences

The wenn-clause is a subordinate clause: the conjugated verb goes to the end. The main clause follows standard rules, but when the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause begins with the verb (inversion):

Wenn-clause first (most common): Wenn ich Zeit habe, | rufe ich dich an. — Verb at end of wenn-clause (habe), verb first in main clause (rufe).

Main clause first: Ich rufe dich an, | wenn ich Zeit habe. — Normal word order in main clause, verb at end of wenn-clause.

Both orders are correct. Starting with the wenn-clause is more common in argumentative writing (forum posts) because it sets up the condition before presenting the consequence.

Conditional Sentences Without Wenn

At B2 level, you can also form conditionals without wenn by inverting the verb in the condition clause. This sounds more formal and sophisticated:

Common Conditional Sentence Mistakes

Wrong verb position in the wenn-clause: Wenn ich habe Zeit — wrong. Wenn ich Zeit habe — correct. The verb must go to the end.

Missing inversion in the main clause: Wenn es regnet, ich bleibe zu Hause — wrong. Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause — correct.

Using Indikativ in unreal conditions: Wenn ich mehr Geld habe, kaufe ich ein Haus — this means you expect to have more money. For a hypothetical: Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich ein Haus kaufen.
