What Is Goethe B2 Schreiben Teil 3?

Schreiben Teil 3 is the extended writing task in the Goethe B2 exam. You produce a longer, structured text of approximately 150 to 200 words — typically a report (Bericht), essay (Aufsatz), or structured analysis — on a given topic. The prompt provides a specific scenario and content points, often asking you to summarize a situation, present advantages and disadvantages, suggest solutions, and give a recommendation. You have about 25 minutes.

Teil 3 tests your ability to produce coherent, well-organized extended writing. Unlike Teil 1 (forum comment) and Teil 2 (formal message), this task evaluates whether you can structure information logically across multiple paragraphs, use topic-specific vocabulary, and maintain a consistent register appropriate to the text type. Reports require a more objective, analytical tone than forum comments — you are presenting information and analysis, not just expressing an opinion.

How Teil 3 Is Scored

Four criteria are evaluated. Task fulfillment checks whether you addressed the topic comprehensively and met all task requirements. A report that discusses advantages but ignores disadvantages, or presents ideas without a recommendation, is incomplete.

Text structure and coherence evaluates whether your text is logically organized with clear paragraphs, each focused on a distinct point. Smooth transitions between paragraphs are essential — jumping from advantages to implementation without a transitional sentence is a coherence error. Examiners also check whether your introduction sets up the topic and your conclusion provides a clear summary or recommendation.

Grammar range and accuracy assesses whether you use a wide variety of grammatical structures correctly. Extended writing at B2 should include passive constructions (Es wurde festgestellt, dass...), extended participial attributes (die von vielen Unternehmen diskutierte Vier-Tage-Woche), Konjunktiv II for hypothetical scenarios (Wenn die Arbeitszeit verkürzt würde, könnten...), and complex sentence patterns with subordinate and relative clauses.

Vocabulary range and precision evaluates whether your word choices are varied, precise, and appropriate for the text type. A report about workplace policies needs different vocabulary than a forum post about personal preferences — terms like Arbeitszeitmodell, Produktivität, Umsetzung, and Wirtschaftlichkeit signal topic-appropriate B2 vocabulary.

Example Task

Your company is considering introducing a four-day work week. Your manager has asked you to write a short report. In your report:

  • Summarize the current discussion about the four-day work week
  • Present the potential advantages and disadvantages
  • Describe how it could be implemented in your department
  • Give your recommendation

How to Write a B2 Extended Text

Start with a clear title and contextualizing introduction. For reports, include a title: Bericht: Einführung einer Vier-Tage-Woche in der Abteilung Marketing (Report: Introduction of a Four-Day Work Week in the Marketing Department). Follow with an introduction that sets the context: In den letzten Jahren wird die Vier-Tage-Woche in vielen Ländern intensiv diskutiert. Zahlreiche Studien belegen, dass eine verkürzte Arbeitswoche sowohl die Zufriedenheit der Mitarbeiter als auch die Produktivität steigern kann. Im Folgenden soll analysiert werden, ob dieses Modell auch in unserer Abteilung umsetzbar wäre.

Organize the body into distinct, focused paragraphs. Each paragraph should address one content point. A paragraph on advantages, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a paragraph on implementation creates a clear, logical structure. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence: Was die Vorteile betrifft, so zeigen internationale Pilotprojekte positive Ergebnisse. (As for the advantages, international pilot projects show positive results.)

Use objective, analytical language. Reports and essays at B2 require a more neutral tone than opinion posts. Instead of Ich finde die Vier-Tage-Woche toll, write Die Vier-Tage-Woche bietet aus arbeitspsychologischer Sicht erhebliche Vorteile. Present information with hedging language where appropriate: Es lässt sich argumentieren, dass... (It can be argued that...), Es ist davon auszugehen, dass... (It can be assumed that...).

Include specific details and examples. A strong report references concrete information: Laut einer Studie aus Island, an der über 2.500 Arbeitnehmer teilnahmen, führte die verkürzte Arbeitszeit zu keinem Produktivitätsverlust. (According to a study from Iceland, in which over 2,500 employees participated, the shortened working time led to no loss of productivity.)

End with a clear recommendation or conclusion. Unter Berücksichtigung aller genannten Aspekte empfehle ich, die Vier-Tage-Woche zunächst als Pilotprojekt für einen Zeitraum von sechs Monaten in unserer Abteilung einzuführen. Anhand der Ergebnisse könnte dann über eine dauerhafte Einführung entschieden werden. (Taking all mentioned aspects into account, I recommend introducing the four-day work week initially as a pilot project for a period of six months in our department. Based on the results, a permanent introduction could then be decided upon.)

Text Types in B2 Teil 3

The Goethe B2 exam uses several text types for Teil 3. Reports (Bericht) ask you to analyze a topic objectively, present findings, and make recommendations — the most common format. Essays (Aufsatz) require you to discuss a topic with balanced argumentation and a clear thesis. Proposals (Vorschlag) ask you to suggest solutions to a problem with justification. Summaries with evaluation require you to condense information and add your own assessment.

Each text type has slightly different register expectations, but all share the requirement for clear structure, logical development, and B2-level language.

Advanced Connectors and Structures for Extended Writing

Extended writing demands a wider range of connectors than shorter tasks. For adding information: Darüber hinaus (moreover), Ferner (furthermore), Des Weiteren (in addition), Hinzu kommt, dass... (added to this is that...). For contrasting: Im Gegensatz dazu (in contrast), Allerdings (however), Dennoch (nevertheless), Während... einerseits... andererseits... (While on the one hand... on the other hand...). For cause and effect: Infolgedessen (as a result), Dies führt dazu, dass... (This leads to...), Aus diesem Grund (for this reason), Daraus ergibt sich, dass... (From this it follows that...). For summarizing: Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass... (In summary, it can be stated that...), Insgesamt betrachtet (overall), Abschließend sei darauf hingewiesen, dass... (In conclusion, it should be noted that...).

Common Mistakes in B2 Schreiben Teil 3

Writing without a plan leads to disorganized texts that jump between topics. Before writing, spend two to three minutes outlining your paragraph structure. A clear plan prevents rambling and ensures you address all content points.

Using informal or opinion-heavy language in a report. A report is not a forum post. Ich finde, dass wir unbedingt die Vier-Tage-Woche einführen sollten is too subjective. Auf der Grundlage der vorliegenden Daten erscheint eine Einführung der Vier-Tage-Woche empfehlenswert is appropriately analytical.

Repeating vocabulary instead of using synonyms and varied expressions. If your topic is Arbeitszeit (working time), alternate with Arbeitszeitmodell, Wochenarbeitszeit, Arbeitsstunden, and Beschäftigungsumfang to demonstrate vocabulary range.

Omitting a conclusion or recommendation. A report or essay without a conclusion feels incomplete and loses marks under both task fulfillment and text structure. Always end with a clear summary and, if requested, a specific recommendation.
