Why Agreement and Disagreement Phrases Matter

Forum posts in the Goethe B1 and B2 exams require you to take a position on a topic and engage with different viewpoints. Simply stating your opinion is not enough — examiners want to see that you can agree with some points, disagree with others, and navigate between positions with nuance. The ability to partially agree or politely disagree is particularly valued at B2 level.

Using dedicated agreement and disagreement phrases also contributes to your vocabulary range score. Instead of writing Ich finde das gut or Ich finde das schlecht for everything, using varied Redemittel like Dem stimme ich voll zu or Da bin ich anderer Meinung shows communicative sophistication.

Expressing Strong Agreement

When you fully support a position, use these phrases:

Ich bin völlig/ganz dieser Meinung. (I am completely of this opinion.) Ich stimme dem voll und ganz zu. (I fully agree with that.) Das sehe ich genauso. (I see it exactly the same way.) Da haben Sie/hast du absolut recht. (You are absolutely right about that.) Ich teile diese Ansicht vollkommen. (I share this view completely.)

After expressing agreement, strengthen your position by adding your own reasoning: Ich stimme dem voll zu, denn... or Das sehe ich genauso, weil...

Expressing Partial Agreement

Partial agreement is particularly powerful in B2 forum posts because it shows nuanced thinking:

Einerseits stimme ich zu, andererseits muss man bedenken, dass... (On the one hand I agree, on the other hand one must consider that...) Das stimmt zwar, aber... (That is true, but...) (Fundamentally I agree, however there are also arguments against it.) In gewisser Hinsicht stimmt das, allerdings... (In a certain respect that is true, however...) (I understand this viewpoint, but I am nevertheless of the opinion that...)

The structure of acknowledging the other side before presenting your counter-argument demonstrates B2-level argumentative competence.

Expressing Polite Disagreement

German values respectful discourse, and Goethe examiners evaluate whether your disagreement is appropriately phrased:

Da bin ich anderer Meinung. (I have a different opinion on that.) Ich sehe das etwas anders. (I see that somewhat differently.) Dem kann ich leider nicht zustimmen. (Unfortunately, I cannot agree with that.) Ich bin da eher skeptisch. (I am rather skeptical about that.) Das überzeugt mich nicht ganz. (That does not fully convince me.) Ich würde dem widersprechen, weil... (I would disagree with that because...)

Always follow disagreement with a reason. Unsupported disagreement (Ich finde das falsch. — full stop) is weak at B1 and insufficient at B2.

Expressing Strong Disagreement

When you strongly oppose a position, these phrases are appropriate while remaining respectful:

Dem muss ich entschieden widersprechen. (I must firmly disagree with that.) Das halte ich für falsch/problematisch. (I consider that wrong/problematic.) Davon bin ich überhaupt nicht überzeugt. (I am not at all convinced of that.) Das stimmt meiner Erfahrung nach nicht. (Based on my experience, that is not true.)

Even strong disagreement should be followed by reasoning and evidence, not emotion.

Agreement/Disagreement in Goethe Exam Tasks

(Simple agreement followed by a nuance.)

(Nuanced partial agreement with both sides developed.)

In B2 formal letters: Ich verstehe Ihren Standpunkt, kann Ihrem Vorschlag jedoch nicht zustimmen, da... (Professional disagreement in a formal context.)

Common Mistakes with Agreement/Disagreement

Using only Ich finde das gut/schlecht: This is too simple for B1 and inadequate for B2. Build a repertoire of varied phrases.

Agreeing without adding anything: Ich stimme zu. — and then nothing more. Always develop your agreement with reasons or examples.

Disagreeing aggressively: Das ist total falsch! — too emotional for the Goethe exam.

Never acknowledging the other side at B2: In a well-constructed B2 argument, you should show that you understand opposing viewpoints even if you disagree with them.
