Why Cause and Effect Connectors Matter

Cause and effect connectors are the backbone of logical writing. In the Goethe exam, every argument needs reasons (weil, da, denn) and every complaint needs consequences (deshalb, daher, infolgedessen). The coherence criterion evaluates whether your ideas follow a logical chain, and cause-effect connectors are the primary tools for creating that chain.

At B1, you need at least weil and deshalb reliably. At B2, examiners expect variety — using da, denn, daher, aus diesem Grund, infolgedessen, folglich alongside the basic connectors shows vocabulary range and formal register competence.

Connectors That Express Cause (Reason)

weil (because) — subordinating, verb to the end: Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich arbeiten muss. The most common cause connector and safe at all levels.

da (since/because) — subordinating, verb to the end: Da ich bereits mehrfach angerufen habe, schreibe ich Ihnen nun. More formal than weil, often placed at the beginning of the sentence. Excellent for B2 formal letters.

denn (because) — coordinating, no word order change: Ich kann nicht kommen, denn ich muss arbeiten. Note: the verb stays in position 2. Many learners confuse this with weil.

nämlich (namely/because) — adverb, no inversion, placed after the verb: Ich kann nicht kommen. Ich muss nämlich arbeiten. A useful alternative that sounds natural in informal writing.

Connectors That Express Effect (Consequence)

deshalb/deswegen (therefore) — adverbial, triggers inversion: Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause. The most common consequence connector.

daher (therefore) — adverbial, triggers inversion: Die Nachfrage ist gestiegen. Daher sind die Preise höher. Slightly more formal than deshalb.

folglich (consequently) — adverbial, triggers inversion: Die Heizung ist defekt. Folglich ist die Wohnung unbewohnbar. Formal, impressive at B2.

aus diesem Grund (for this reason): Aus diesem Grund möchte ich mich über den Service beschweren. Excellent for formal complaint letters.

infolgedessen (as a result): Infolgedessen sehe ich mich gezwungen, eine Mietminderung geltend zu machen. Very formal, powerful in B2 escalation letters.

sodass/so dass (so that — result): Die Heizung funktioniert nicht, sodass die Temperatur unter 18 Grad liegt. Subordinating — verb to the end.

Connectors That Express Purpose

damit (so that) — subordinating, verb to the end. Used when the subjects of both clauses are different: Ich schreibe Ihnen, damit Sie das Problem kennen. (I'm writing to you so that you know about the problem.)

um...zu + Infinitiv (in order to) — used when the subject is the same in both clauses: Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten. (I'm learning German in order to work in Germany.) Shorter and more elegant than damit when possible.

Word Order Summary

Understanding word order is critical because each connector type behaves differently:

Subordinating (weil, da, damit, sodass): verb goes to the END of the clause. Coordinating (denn): verb stays in position 2 — no change. Adverbial (deshalb, daher, folglich, aus diesem Grund): triggers INVERSION — verb comes immediately after.

In formal complaint letters: Da die Heizung seit drei Wochen nicht funktioniert, ist die Wohnung kaum bewohnbar. Aus diesem Grund fordere ich Sie auf, das Problem umgehend zu beheben. Sollte keine Reparatur erfolgen, sehe ich mich gezwungen, eine Mietminderung geltend zu machen.

In forum posts: Viele Jugendliche verbringen zu viel Zeit am Handy. Deshalb haben sie weniger Zeit für Sport und soziale Kontakte. Da Bewegung für die Gesundheit wichtig ist, sollten Eltern die Bildschirmzeit begrenzen.

In informal emails: Ich konnte leider nicht kommen, weil ich krank war. Deswegen möchte ich mich entschuldigen.

Common Mistakes

Wrong word order with weil: Weil ich bin krank — wrong. Weil ich krank bin — correct.

Confusing weil and denn word order: Denn ich krank bin — wrong. Denn ich bin krank — correct. Denn does not change word order.

Missing inversion after deshalb: Deshalb ich bleibe zu Hause — wrong. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause — correct.
